Hamilton wished he was on holiday in final races
“Hamilton sealed this year’s championship in Austin, despite Rosberg winning the Grand Prix, and he conceded afterwards that justice was perhaps done, as he was a little overly aggressive in overtaking during that race”.
The 30-year-old Englishman says that the pair’s difference could come from the contrasting childhood’s, with Hamilton having grown up on a council estate and Rosberg spending his childhood in Monaco as the son of 1982 Formula 1 champion Keke Rosberg.
“You’ve seen he complains about a lot of things”, says the Briton in an interview for the BBC’s F1 Review, which will be shown later this month.
Wolff has said that a lot has gone on in private this season that he is not happy about, and he has suggested that the issue is not just related to tensions between Rosberg and Hamilton.
“This is the one opportunity and you take it. That doesn’t mean wiping someone out or cheating but you have to be fierce, strong and hard to as much of the limit as you can be”.
Wolff, Hamilton’s boss, described the simmering tension between his two drivers as Mercedes’ “biggest weakness” and also claimed he would consider dropping one of them should their relationship continue to sour. In the 38 races over the past two seasons, Hamilton has won 21 races and Rosberg has won 11, as they have swept the constructors’ championship both times as well.
There were several flashpoints this season, first in China, when Rosberg accused Hamilton of deliberately trying to scupper his race, and then in Japan and the United States, when the world champion forced his team-mate wide at turn one.
“But this side [of team-mate tension] is always blown out of proportion”.
‘His complaining over the past three races won by Rosberg is said to have grated on senior Mercedes executives and even irritated the engineers close to Hamilton.
Hamilton has three more years while Rosberg is signed till the end of 2016 with a team that this year won 16 of 19 races and enjoyed a record 12 one-two finishes. It’s not like he’s been distracted and not finished high up or vice-versa. We’ve both done a great job and not caused any problems.
We’ll never be best friends but we make it work.
Wolff added: “Going forward, we will consider if it is the best set-up for the team”. “It is important to have talented and fast drivers in the vehicle”. We were coming from Abu Dhabi to Dubai and this guy got lost.
