Hamm, Henson, ‘Mozart in the Jungle’ lead Globes TV honors
Amazon Studio’s streaming show “Mozart in the Jungle”, about the backstage lives of NY classical musicians, went home with the best TV comedy series and a best actor award for its star Gael Garcia Bernal. Its new series “Mr. Robot” won the Globe for best television drama, and veteran Christian Slater was a popular choice at the Beverly Hills Hotel for his best supporting actor award.
The Amazon show beat out fellow nominees Casual (Hulu), Orange Is the New Black (Netflix), Silicon Valley (HBO), Transparent (Amazon) and Veep (HBO).
Pop star Lady Gaga, dressed old-style Hollywood in a form fitting black velvet gown, was a modest victor for her role as a vampire countess in the limited series “American Horror Story: Hotel”.
In other television categories, Jon Hamm won his second Golden Globe for best actor in a drama for his portrayal of womanizing advertising executive Don Draper in “Mad Men”, whose finale aired past year. Take it from a former band nerd and music major: For all of the show’s dips into light surrealism (Rodrigo sometimes talks to an imaginary Mozart) and absurdist humor (the first chair oboist is treated to a Mozart stripper at her anniversary party), it is incredibly committed not only to the feeling of working in an ensemble, but also to making that lifestyle real.
Taraji P. Henson came prepared, handing out cookies to audience members as she came to the stage to accept a best actress award.
The Mozart in the Jungle star has two children, son Lazaro, 6, and 4-year-old daughter Libertad, with Argentine actress Dolores Fonzi.
She was in competition with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jamie Lee Curtis, Gina Rodriguez and Lily Tomlin.
“Thank you to Mr Weiner (the show’s creator) who wrote this frightful person and picked me to play him”. She recalled how after another network rejected the pilot, six other networks in a single day turned down a chance to acquire it.
Streaming services, cable networks and broadcasters all won trophies Sunday, but not the three best-known networks in the business – CBS, ABC or NBC.
