Hammon, Spurs take Las Vegas Summer League championship
The Atlanta Hawks Summer League team defeated the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday, advancing to the Las Vegas Summer League’s Final Four. But her hiring didn’t draw widespread attention until this July, when she coached the Spurs summer league team for the first time.
“It was a grind”, Hammon said. Suns fans will be thrilled to see a team on the floor that reminds them of the Steve Nash – Amare Stoudemire days. In two seasons at UCLA, Anderson averaged 12.2 points, 8.7 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game in 71 contests (70 starts). Considering softball-playing women have likely played more baseball than most of the sabermetricians out there, they’d easily be able to work the numbers on when to pinch-hit, when to steal, batting orders, defensive shifts, etc. I think this is the league, after the National Basteball Association, that we could most likely see a female manager. “They were exhausted and they fought through”.
“It’s unbelievable. It was a humbling experience for all of us”, he said on NBATV.
“She knows when to talk and she knows when to shut up”, is how Popovich, as only he could, described her best attribute to the NBA’s Inside Stuff television show.
I believe she will get her shot at becoming a head coach once she has established herself as an
assistant.
But the memories of this week will stay with Hammon and her players forever.
The New Orleans Pelicans are leaving Las Vegas after five wins and one loss added up to an impressive summer showing.
Jonathan Simmons led the Spurs with 23 points, while Treveon Graham also had 22 markers in the win. Yesterday, just like any other winning coach, Hammon got a Gatorade bath.
“I already love her, and I’ve barely [known] her a couple of days”, he told reporters.
Hammon, in turn, acknowledged the relationship she’s forged with her players. “It’s women instead of men, but it’s the same game”, Popovich said.
“You never know what your journey has in store”, Hammon told Sports Illustrated.
“She’s a firecracker. She takes no prisoners”.
“This has just kind of thrown me into the fire a little big, and you’ll either melt or it’ll make you harder and stronger”, she said. She continued, “I’m just thankful that [Popovich] trusted me with the guys in that locker room, and that those guys trusted me back”. “Your mind is constantly moving and thinking about different scenarios, not only your team but on their team, trying to figure out things that maybe you can exploit”.
