Hammon to Become 1st Female Head Coach of NBA Summer League – Kolo

“In some ways it is trail- blazing, but there have been so many other women doing great things and I’m just following in their path”, Hammon said after being named a Spurs assistant coach last season.

Becky Hammon will coach the Spurs’ Las Vegas summer league team, according to SAEN’s Jeff McDonald.

“Nothing in my life has really ever been easy”. Hammon, 38, was praised by Spurs coaches and players for her work in her first season with the team, helped by knowing numerous players because she was a six-time WNBA All-Star for the San Antonio Silver Stars. “Throw those all in there and this was the ideal challenge and opportunity”.

“Im still seeing what kind of head coach Im going to be, ” Hammon told reporters in San Antonio, with the video of the interview posted to the teams web site. When they shift to Las Vegas for the league’s biggest of its three summer showcases, Hammon will be in charge. San Antonio will play at least five games in Vegas.

Natalie Nakase was as an assistant coach in the summer league for the Los Angeles Clippers in 2014, but Hammon will be the first female head coach. The Salt Lake City summer league starts Monday.
