Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights though it is celebrated by other communities too in many parts of the nation.

People usually wake up early in the morning on this day and the women in the house get busy preparing delicacies, sweets, and savouries and distributing them to neighbours, relatives, and friends.

The festival of lights has a great importance in Hindu mythology and is celebrated with elation.
The Muslim Council of Dimapur also greets the people on the occasion. The day is primarily celebrated to commemorate the happy return of Lord Rama from his 14 years of exile. While those belonging to poor families were seen buying diyas, candles, the elite looked buying expensive crockery items, gold and diamond jewellery to give to near and dear ones.
The main ritual performed on this day is Goddess Lakshmi Devi Puja. After prayers, fireworks follow, then people sit down for a feast that includes candies.

According to another myth, on the day of Dhanteras, the jar of elixir (amrit) came out from the Ksheer Sagar after the churning (manthan) of it by gods and demons. Diwali is celebrated on the third day and then Padva is observed the next day dedicated to the husband-wife relationship and the festivities end with Bhai Dooj, dedicated to the sister-brother bond, on the fifth day.
