´Harsh´ Janmaat red cost Newcastle – McClaren
Newcastle United have yet to win in the Premier League this season.
Swansea have made a habit of ruining the opening day parties of Premier League big hitters.
“I talked to the players all week about good teams backing up good performances with another”.
Swansea weren’t holding back though and looked to press home their advantage within minutes of the re-start.
Looking into the future, this performance gives a foreboding feeling going into the next match against Manchester United, which will be a real test of Newcastle United’s vitality.
“It was a long way from goal”, said McClaren. McClaren ridiculed that. “It’s a weird statement to make”, he said. “I thought the referee could have been lenient. To say the sending-off had no effect is naive”.
Eyebrows were raised when former defender Garry Monk inherited the manager’s job at Swansea City following Michael Laudrup’s sacking in 2014 but few doubt the wisdom of that decision now.
Both sides had a case.
“Unfortunately Swansea played better than us and we have to accept that”.
Swansea struck on a brilliant run from Gomis which met an equally-impressive ball from Jonjo Shelvey, who has been dynamite to start the campaign. “For the second goal, the Argentine was beaten in the air by 5’9” Andre Ayew which is the third headed goal the Magpies have shipped this season.
Ecuador global Montero hinted at the damage his pace and trickery could do during an injury-hit first season in south Wales, but has illuminated the early stages of this Premier League season.
McClaren had, by this point, hooked lone striker Papiss Cisse and replaced him with Rolando Aarons, further limiting Newcastle’s goalscoring opportunities, and in the end Swansea held on for a comfortable victory.
A reckless mistake and one which cost his team, down to 10 men for the rest of the game.
I, for one, hope so. “We need to learn about individual players can do and this didn’t help us to do that”.
Perhaps the laziness of some players as a result from the previous management was a factor in the lack of desire on Saturday, but this needs to be eradicated immediately under the new regime before it becomes a more significant issue.
McClaren said at the time, per the report: “We think it is just a kick on the shin which flared up”.
“The game doesn’t represent that now I don’t think there is any bad in the game now”.
Since being promoted to the top-flight, Swansea have collected more points against Newcastle than any other side (17 – W5 D2 L1). “But we’ll work hard, keep playing our football and see where it takes us”.
