Harvey misses Mets’ workout, apologizes after late arrival
He addressed the situation with the media Wednesday morning (bright and early, and one time), and said he’d spoken with Sandy Alderson, and Terry Collins.
“I know we had the mandatory workout and the last thing I ever want to do is not be here for my team”, he said, according to Newsday.
“What’s memorable to me is just how 25 guys came together and for a manager and a coaching staff and did something special that not only did the world not believe, but statistically shouldn’t have happened”, said former Dodgers pitcher Orel Hershiser, who won Game Seven. Later, Collins told Newsday and the New York Post that when Harvey showed up, he said he had lost track of time.
Harvey’s agent, Scott Boras, did not immediately return a text message from The Associated Press. The Mets open the series with two games in Los Angeles on Friday and Saturday. Harvey is scheduled to start Game 3 at Citi Field on Monday.
The fact the David Wright chose to make a big deal out of this, shows that the team has become sick and exhausted of Harvey’s antics.
Over his final five starts of the season, Harvey’s gone 2-1 with two no decisions but he hasn’t worked beyond the seventh inning and in his last four games the pitch count hasn’t exceeded 97.
“Unfortunately, (Tuesday) I screwed up”. All the team had to say is that Matt will be in later for a light stretch, and there would be no situation. But the pedigree, the accomplishments – you look at the back of the baseball cards of those two guys and that’s about as good as it gets.
“We all know that they’re both two of the best pitchers in the game”, Cuddyer said this week. “I know we had a mandatory workout”. But you think back to it, everybody has been late at a few point in time over the course of their life, their career, whatever it happens to be.
As for reserve infielder Juan Uribe, he won’t be available in the Division Series but hasn’t been ruled out if the Mets advance to the next round, Alderson said. Uribe originally damaged cartilage in his chest diving for a grounder at second base on September 20. As the pitching change was made, Hershiser – who started Game Three on three days rest the previous night – put on his uniform and sprinted into the Dodgers’ bullpen. With a combined regular season era under 2.00 this will be no simple task for the New York Metropolitans.
They could be a great matchup with the Dodgers given how hard the Mets youngsters throw and the perceived vulnerability of the Dodgers lineup against high-velocity pitchers.
