Have a broken iPhone? Apple’s new buyback program covers broken screens, cameras
Also, it’s not a complete explanation: last spring, Daily Dot editor Mike Wehner experienced problems with his iPhone 6 Plus screen and Touch ID sensor that eventually pulled up Error 53. He had to get it repaired through local shops in Macedonia as there were no Apple stores in the area. When iPhone is serviced by an authorised Apple service provider or Apple retail store for changes that affect the touch ID sensor, the pairing is re-validated.
Essentially, as Apple has told the press, the phone’s Touch ID button needs to interact with a “secure enclave” where your fingerprints are stored.
As for the hardware on the iPad Air 3, it is expected that Apple will include the A9X chipset on it. This will ensure that the device is fast and second to the iPad Pro in terms of speed, which also has a similar chipset.
A simple Google search of the error will lead you to numerous posts and threads in Apple’s Support Communities with users complaining about the issue and how their device is officially dead. Apple recommends contacting their support team if this happens but even then, you may be out of luck.
In an official statement pertaining to the issue, Apple said that “Error 53 is the result of security checks created to protect our customers”.
“If iOS finds a mismatch, the check fails and Touch ID, including for Apple Pay use, is disabled”, it continues.
It is perfectly understandable that Apple would check your iPhone for modified components when you restore or update your device considering the touch ID sensor is contained in the home button and is a big security feature of newer iPhones and iPads. Each Touch ID sensor is uniquely tied to the iOS device’s motherboard for additional security.
Now, the terms have loosened a bit as Apple hopes that this new initiative will lead to more phone upgrades. And sometimes it’s not about the money – the Guardian described the experience of a freelance photographer that didn’t have access to an authorized Apple technician, and his only option was a third-party repairman.
