‘Have Your People Call Our People’ Tweets ‘Miss Universe’ Over Oscar Flub
I opened the envelope, and it said Emma Stone, La La Land. Realising he’s been handed the wrong victor, Beatty looks off-stage several times and even plays for time as he reads out the category title, clearly looking for some kind of cue from the wings. Ultimately though, he’s going to be remembered as the guy who passed the buck to Dunaway, who did what any of us would’ve done – read what’s on the card just to break the frightful tension of the moment. “I wanted to make sure the right thing was done”. Who gave them the wrong envelope?
Here’s the explanation from PricewaterhouseCoopers accountants Brian Cullinan and Martha Ruiz, who are in charge of counting all the ballots submitted by Academy members. While on stage, Beatty gave a quick explanation for how the wrong name came to be called, saying that when he opened the envelope he saw Emma Stone’s name – that’s why he took such a long time announcing the victor.
Why the need for duplicates?
In a never-before-seen moment of the Oscars, the wrong Best Picture victor was announced – and wasn’t discovered until the wrong recipient had already begun giving acceptance speeches.
“We have two briefcases, that are identical, and we have two entire sets of winning envelopes”. We go to the show separately with police escorts. “I know more than anyone else in the world about this”, explained the 60-year-old.
With the entertainment media and the internet immediately scouring the video to investigate what happened, it soon emerged that Stone was holding her envelope the whole time-which she confirmed in interviews.
“Have your people call our people – we know what to do”, says the tweet which has collected over 21,000 “likes” and more than 16,000 retweets within an hour of being posted. “We’ve been on a real journey for the past six months”.
You better believe there’s going to be some tweaking done to the process.
The British actress was “disappointed” by the incident, which saw La La Land declared the victor before organisers stepped in during producer Jordan Horowitz’s acceptance speech and revealed that the gong had actually gone to Moonlight.
Jimmy Kimmel, the award’s host, made fun of the mistake by comparing it to Steve Harvey’s error when announcing the victor of Miss Universe.
