Hawaii disciplines 3 players ahead of Cal game in Sydney
The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors kicked off the Nick Rolovich era against the Golden Bears in Sydney, Australia with a surprise onside kick.
Pre game was a sight to see and was a polar opposite to what Australian sports fans are used to.
But the unusual scene featured a name familiar to football fans on the Central Coast.
For the third straight season, the Cal Bears opened their season with a win in week one, running through Hawaii’s defense for a 51-31. After Cal went up 14-7 on a Hansen 19-yard catch from Webb, UH again came right back with an electrifying run 53-yard touchdown run by Saint Juste. On the very next play, Webb found Hansen on a quick screen and the redshirt junior did the rest, bolting for a 34-yard touchdown.
“Both teams should look to put on a show for the fans Down Under”, Parkila said, “and the scoring should happen early and often”.
The Bears were sputtering with a 17-14 lead midway through the second half when the momentum turned – for good. Defensively, Hawaii is allowing 51 points and 630 yards per game.
As a starter in 2014, Woolsey completed roughly half of his pass attempts while throwing for 2,538 yards, 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. From age 6, he camped out in front of the TV to watch college football and charted plays on index cards.
Cal bottomed out in Dykes’ first season, going 1-11 in 2013 and hemorrhaging yards on defense.
Hawaii was led by wide receiver Marcus Kemp with four receptions for 73 yards and one TD.
SYDNEY (AP) – The beer ran out in some sections of the Olympic stadium, but most of the 61,247 spectators at Saturday’s US college football opener in Sydney between California and Hawaii appeared to be enjoying their American “gridiron” experience.
Hawaii fumbled on a kickoff after Matt Anderson’s second field goal for Cal, and Webb’s 34-yard pass to Hansen on the next play gave Cal a 27-14 lead.
Harris will have to go through a bit of an adjustment period as Hawaii tries to fill the hole left by Ben Clarke at left tackle. We got the victory and I’m proud of my teammates and the way they executed the game plan but as Coach Dykes said, we’ve got a lot of things to work on to get ready for San Diego State.
Hawaii was an unimpressive team last season, finishing 3-10 with wins over Colorado, UC Davis and UL Monroe.
HAWAII: It gets doesn’t get any easier as the Rainbow Warriors make their first visit to the Big House when they play MI in Ann Arbor in September 3.
