Health officials: 21 cases of travel-related Zika in Florida

According to Maduro, three confirmed deaths have been recorded due to Zika. But officials in hospitals and government are monitoring the situation, educating the public and tracking people who have traveled to parts of the world where there have been outbreaks.

Amid an increase of travel-related Zika cases in Florida, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention briefed Florida health care providers on the virus.

Zika is transmitted to people primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito from two species, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, neither of which is common to the Buffalo Niagara region.

Zika usually causes mild flu-like symptoms in adults.

In addition, there has been a link between Zika virus infections and the number of babies born with congenital microcephaly, a condition in which the size of the child’s head is significantly smaller than expected for their age or sex at the time.

Researchers have confirmed more than 460 of these cases as microcephaly and identified evidence of Zika infection in 41 of these cases, but have not proven that Zika can cause microcephaly.

Currently, 33 countries in the Americas have reported circulation of Zika virus.

Lee Suy said it will be better if the athletes will not be bothered by the threat of the mosquito-borne virus while they prepare for their competition.

“They are concerned and are being given advice on how to proceed”, Cassius Duran, a former Brazilian diver, told reporters at the inauguration of the remodeled Maria Lenk Aquatic Centre, where the Olympic diving will be held in August. So this is not transmitted from person to person.

The third case did not involve an actual case of sexual transmission.

The agency said the decision was made after the World Health Organization on Friday last week listed Thailand as a country with indigenous Zika cases. Common signs and symptoms of the disease include fever, rash, red eyes, and joint pain.

On Tuesday, Colombia reported that almost 100 cases of GBS have been reported across the country, with all these patients also suffering from Zika.

Overall, about 15 groups are working on Zika vaccines.
