Hear Donald Trump accept the Republican Party nomination for President
Ted Cruz takes the stage at the Republican National Convention on July 20, 2016. “He’s bringing in voters who might have traditionally voted Democrat so I think we’ve got a shot with him”.
He did say, however, he would not vote for the Democratic presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton.
Clinton campaign chair John Podesta said Trump painted a too-dark picture of America in a speech featuring “more fear, more division, more anger, more hate”.
Between defining chants of “U-S-A” and “Trump, Trump, Trump” the mogul-turned-TV-star-turned-politico cast himself as the “law and order candidate” and vowed to champion “people who work hard but no longer have a voice”.
Illegal immigrants, Mr Trump said, “are being released by the tens of thousands into our communities”, where he said they were straining resources, taking jobs away from American citizens and, in some cases, committing crimes.
Hoping to close out the conference on a high note, Trump was due to give a prime-time speech on Thursday evening. Republican Chairman George Gilmore. He said he would buck current multi-country trade deals in favor negotiating individual deals with individual nations. He blamed her for the rise of Islamic State militants and blasted her willingness to accept thousands of Syrian refugees. He continued, “After fifteen years of wars in the Middle East, after trillions of dollars spent and thousands of lives lost, the situation is worse than it has ever been before”. “America deserves better [than Hillary Clinton]”.
To some, Ted Cruz’s decision not to endorse Trump in his Wednesday night address may have helped unify the party because even some of Cruz’s allies thought he’d made a mistake.
In the four-day event, anti-Trump fractions in the party tried to change convention rules to undermine his nomination, and Trump’s wife Melania was accused of plagiarizing in her speech.
“All right, that was pretty well-orchestrated”, he said. Trump asked, as he wondered aloud if he could create a super PAC as president to go after Cruz.
“To me it doesn’t matter if he was your first or 17th pick”, Walker said, noting he pledged to support the party’s nominee a year ago.
Trump brushed aside the controversy, insisting Cruz was an outlier in an otherwise unified party.
Ted Cruz, with his wife Heidi, announced the suspension of his campaign in May. “I know he believes his conviction is so strong, but sometimes you have to understand that it is bigger than you”.
“I am not in the habit of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my father”, Senator Cruz told a meeting of the Texas delegation in Cleveland. Governor Christie told New Jersey delegates that his speech showed why Ted Cruz is the most disliked person in either party.
Newt Gingrich soon came on and tried to fix the rift by trying to convince the crowd Cruz really had endorsed Trump. Trump’s controversial comments on Muslims, Mexicans and women are also up for grabs on the avatars.
Ben Spencer, an alternate delegate from New Mexico, said he did not initially prefer Trump for president but has grown to appreciate his plans for America. Eileen Collins, a former astronaut and the first female commander of a space shuttle flight, was supposed to end her speech with, “We need leadership that will make America first again”.
“I appreciate the enthusiasm of the NY delegates”, Cruz said, thinking that would hold them for a while.
“I think what people saw last night is what we have seen in the Senate”. He spoke of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, and said, “Countries we are protecting at a massive cost to us will be asked to pay their fair share”.
If the convention’s miscues emboldened the Hillary camp, making them more confident of an easy victory, Trump’s closing night speech offered plenty of reasons why they should not underestimate him and why he can defeat her.
During their convention, Republicans were relentless and often raw in demonizing Clinton.
This, a Trump top aide remarked, is now the “party of Trump”.
