Heard audio of Chicago shooting? You may have been fooled
The Tribune reports all the footage from 12 camera angles inside and outside the restaurant have a gap of about 80 minutes.
The footage, which doesn’t have audio, shows an officer sitting in front of a computer and another officer walking around.
In Seattle, nearly all police video is posted online almost immediately, though special software blurs the images and a video with clear images must be requested.
Oppenheimer says Officer George Hernandez pulled up in an unmarked police vehicle with his gun drawn. Johnson tried to run and was chased by officers on foot, none of whom opened fire, Oppenheimer said.
On Tuesday, Emanuel fired police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, saying the public had lost faith in his ability to lead the department after the McDonald shooting.
The city said in a statement earlier this week that it was reconsidering its stance on the Johnson video in light of being forced to release the police dashcam video of the McDonald case.
The white police officer charged with murder for shooting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald is also involved in a possible police cover-up in the brutal police killing of Emmanuel Lopez in 2005, court records reveal. Officer Jason Van Dyke was charged with first-degree murder just last week.
CHICAGO Chicago officials on Friday released video from a nearby Burger King restaurant taken on the night a police officer fatally shot a black teen but it was missing the time period when the 2014 shooting occurred.
Some Chicagoans have also called for the resignations of Emanuel and Alvarez. He indicated her future should be a local decision.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel told the media Thursday that the city would drop its fight against the release of the video, and make it available sometime next week.
Oppenheimer said the squad auto that recorded the video began to move shortly after Johnson collapsed in the parkway, so the officers’ actions in the immediate aftermath were not recorded. “It is a small step in terms of justice for Dorothy Holmes and her family and her son”.
Holmes and her attorney have seen the video and have pushed for its release. A federal FOIA lawsuit was then filed in October 2014.
The FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago have been investigating McDonald’s shooting for more than a year.
“I think it is a step in the right direction”, Oppenheimer said. City officials have said they have not released the video because it is part of an open investigation. The comments come a day after Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton called for an independent Department of Justice investigation.
The group wants a federal investigation of the state attorney’s and mayor’s office.
A Justice Department civil rights investigation would go beyond the McDonald case to look at patterns and practices of the entire department and whether they violate the U.S. Constitution or federal laws, such as discriminating against minorities.
