Hearthstone generates $20 million a month becoming most successful digital CCG
To help you understand the game’s dominance, in 2014 Hearthstone had more than double the revenue of its closest CCG rival, Marvel: War of Heroes.
According to a recent report released by SuperData (via VG247), they have estimated that Blizzard is making a whopping $20 million a month just from Hearthstone alone.
The information is detailed in the company’s summary of its annual digital card games report.
“Collectible card games have been tremendously popular for a long time, and in its transition to digital has managed to reach a massive audience”, Superdata analyst Carter Rogers explained. “It’s a fascinating category … because it combines micro-transactions with strategic, competitive game play”. According to the report, the portability and popularity of mobile devices have created an excellent environment for CCG players, many of which have transitioned from playing physical CCGs to digital ones. The results show that CCGs were a $1.2 billion industry last year – which is predicted to increase by $100 million by year end. Rogers attributes this success to Activision’s marketing and cross-promotion platforms.
In a blog post, Superdata digs down into the dual successes of Hearthstone on PC and on mobile.
It is easy to see that this game was made for tablets given how great it works on iPads and the 4:3 aspect ratio of the board but being a Blizzard game, one would expect the PC player base to be highest.
