Heavy snow breaks tree limbs, disrupts transit
BOSTON (AP) Stoic New Englanders doggedly went about their business Friday as a winter storm that could drop close to a foot of snow in some areas struck the region.
As the Northeast continues to rebound from Winter Storm Jonas, another storm is dumping snow on the region and is causing delays and cancellations in New York City and Boston.
Officials in MA and CT warned motorists to stay off roadways and the region’s main airport, Boston Logan International, reporting that about one in five flights had been canceled, with service to NY most effected. Otherwise, the Boston-area transit system that was crippled by last winter’s storms was holding up well, Gov. Charlie Baker said earlier in the day.
The snow was expected to clear in coastal New England by Friday evening.
In Framingham, thousands of people called power company Eversource to report they were experiencing outages Friday morning, according to a company representative.
There were numerous accidents and spinouts on New England highways due to the heavy snow.
New England is digging out from its first big snowfall of the season, as forecasters eye another potential winter storm early next week.
Commuters at the LIRR station said that the roads ranged from so-so to treacherous, with snow blowing in all directions, according to NBC 4 NY.
Kaleigh Kenyon was playing with her dad around 2 p.m. when the branch weighed down by heavy, wet snow hit her in the head and pinned her beneath it, her family told WXFT-TV.
She says because the island typically gets less snow, they’re able to manage it more easily. Meteorologist Mal Walker in Caribou said Maine’s eastern tip could see up to 11 inches.
“Plan on doubling your normal drive time Friday”, the National Weather Service said.
