HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH Sets Broadway Closing Date
Time to pack away the acid-wash denim and gold Go-go boots and put that wig back in the box.
The Tony Award-winning musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch is to play its final performance on Broadway September 13, producers announced Tuesday. It was performed at the Belasco Theater and will finish with 22 previews and 506 regular shows.
Good news for non-New York fans of the musical: A touring version hits the road starting October 4, 2016 in San Francisco. Hedwig heralded a historic year of acceptance and celebration across America.
Other Hedwigs have included Andrew Rannels (“Girls”), Michael C. Hall (“Six Feet Under”), original Hedwig John Cameron Mitchell, Darren Criss (“Glee“) and current Hedwig Taye Diggs. Michael Mayer directed. The show won the 2014 Tony for best musical revival. “I couldn’t be prouder of the entire team and am thrilled that audiences across the U.S. will soon be able to experience our show when it begins its national tour”.
Written by John Cameron Mitchell and composer Stephen Trask, “Hedwig” is a tale of obsession, glam rock, a botched sex-change operation and a quest for identity. Hedwig and the Angry Inch has been an HMI supporter since 2003 helping LGBTQ at-risk youth through ticket sales, album proceeds and fundraising.
Binder, who first produced Hedwig off-Broadway in 1997, is partnered on Broadway with Jayne Baron Sherman, Barbara Whitman, Latitude Link, Patrick Catullo, Raise The Roof, Paula Marie Black, Colin Callender, Ruth Hendel, Sharon Karmazin, Martian Entertainment, Stacey Mindich, Eric Schnall, and The Shubert Organization.
