Heisman finalists: Henry, McCaffrey and Watson
Henry has been inconsistent at times this season and McCaffrey’s team isn’t even playing in the College Football Playoff.
McCaffrey broke the NCAA record for all-purpose yards in a season with 3,496, surpassing Barry Sanders.
The junior running back capped his Heisman campaign with a 189-yard, one touchdown performance in the SEC Championship game against Florida. Watson is just one step away from joining the likes of other quarterbacks to win the award in recent years, such as Marcus Mariota, Jameis Winston, Johnny Manziel, Robert Griffin III, and Cam Newton – a friend to Watson since the former Red Elephants quarterback was re-writing the state record books.
Stanford’s sophomore running back Christian McCaffrey led the Pac-12 in rushing yards (1,847) and receiving yards amongst running backs (540). This time, Watson is pictured celebrating on the podium Saturday after he accounted for five touchdowns in the top-ranked Tigers’ 45-37 victory over North Carolina in the 2015 ACC Championship in Charlotte.
The reasonable person’s quarterback list: Trevone Boykin of TCU; Paxton Lynch of Memphis; Baker Mayfield of Oklahoma; Keenan Reynolds of Navy; Greg Ward Jr. of Houston; and Deshaun Watson of Clemson.
Alabama has now seen 13 of its players finish in the top five of the Heisman voting since the first award was handed out in 1935, behind only Notre Dame (29), Ohio State (18), Oklahoma (17) and USC (16). Yet his TD-to-interception is 30 to 11, the latter an extremely high number for a potential Heisman victor. The Heisman Trophy has been a dream of mine since I was a little kid and the chance to go to NY as a finalist is unbelievable, but none of this would be possible without my coaches and teammates. When he’s averaging 28.9 yards per return, that immediately sets the Cardinal up to win the field position battle that often determines games.
The victor of the Heisman Trophy will be announced on Saturday, Dec. 12 at the Best Buy Theater in NY.
Pretty inspiring. I’d normally say “May the best man win”.
All three of those players played two more games than Fournette – something LSU coach Les Miles made note of on Sunday night during a news conference regarding the Tigers’ Texas Bowl matchup against Texas Tech. He was only really “shut down” once and that was against Northwestern to open the year, the most perplexing game of the season.
The regular season is over, yet the Heisman Trophy race is anything but settled. I am honored to be the first Heisman finalist from Clemson…I plan to represent our team and Clemson and the Clemson family this weekend.
McCaffrey, a dynamic sophomore running back for Stanford, was named a finalist for college football’s most prestigious award on Monday.
“I’m not here to tell you that I know who the best Heisman candidate is”. Kickoff from the Cotton Bowl is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT on ESPN.
“He’s gained more yards in one year than anybody who’s ever played college football”, head coach David Shaw said.
“He’s excited to show his mom NY, so that was kind of neat”, said Bourret.
