Heisman finalists: Henry, McCaffrey, Watson
Mark Ingram was the last RB to win the Heisman and he is also an Alabama alum, but Henry boasts far more impressive stats than Ingram did.
Stanford’s sophomore running back Christian McCaffrey led the Pac-12 in rushing yards (1,847) and receiving yards amongst running backs (540).
Watson had 420 total yards and accounted for five touchdowns in Clemson’s Atlantic Coast Conference championship game win against North Carolina. He sat out last season after transferring to Oklahoma, where he has thrown for an average of 282.4 yards per game this season while completing 68.6 percent of his passes.
Both Henry and McCaffrey have also shattered the records of former Heisman winners.
Meanwhile, as great as Henry and McCaffrey were, nobody is going to cry foul if Clemson’s Watson were to hear his name called. By percentage, that ranks as the closest Heisman vote in history.
“I think he’ll look at next year a little bit differently”, Miles said.
FILE – -This Oct. 3, 2015, file photo shows Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson taking the snap during the first half of an NCAA college football game against Notre Dame in Clemson, S.C. Calm and confident without being flashy, Watsons style led the Tigers to their first 12-0 season since 1981 _ and a chance to accomplish much more.
The record-setting University of Alabama junior running back was one of three players named a Heisman Trophy finalist and invited to New York City for the ceremony. Just like the actual Heisman ballot, SI.com’s People Heisman ballot awards three points for a first-place vote, two points for a second-place vot and one point for a third-place vote.
East Carolina’s Justin Hardy won the award past year.
Watson, the quarterback for the 2012 Class AAAAA state champion Red Elephants, has a national following for his soft-spoken and polite manner – the polar opposite of numerous most famous players who’ve grabbed attention for scandal and eligiblity issues. He’s one of the central reasons, certainly on offense, why Clemson has yet to lose a game in 2015.
This season he passed for 3,512 yards and 30 touchdowns, hitting 287 of 313 passes.
We Heisman voters can’t disclose our selections beforehand or risk being run over by 1,000 stiff-arms.
It’s been alleged that Sanders, who amassed 3,250 yards in 11 games in his Heisman-winning 1988 season, should still be considered the single-season all-purpose yards record holder.
Watson was the superstar on the nation’s top team, but he is the only QB that can keep the Heisman Trophy at the position for a sixth straight year.
But as favorites struggled (running backs Leonard Fournette of LSU and Ezekiel Elliott of Ohio State) or got hurt (quarterbacks Trevone Boykin of TCU and Seth Russell of Baylor), the dynamic changed.
