Everyone from British Prime Minister David Cameron to Kanye West paid their tributes over social media as they woke to the news of Bowie’s death.

The British musician died surrounded by his family following an 18-month battle with cancer.

Bowie told Ellen DeGeneres in a 2004 interview that he experimented with a number of religions including Christianity before finding his place as a singer.

Bowie also elaborated on the inspiration behind some of his most anthemic songs and beloved records.

The Rock star’s influence seemed to have encompassed not only the world of music, but also that of politics and religion. There are countless tales of people from the 80s – the Romantic era, guys wearing make-up and all that – they all say it wouldn’t have been anything, it all came from David Bowie.
