Henry wins 2015 Heisman Trophy: Twitter reacts
The 80th Heisman Trophy Winner will be crowned tonight (7 p.m. Eastern on ESPN) and will find themselves in pretty good company.
Live streaming is available via WatchESPN.
Deshaun Watson is one of just three finalists for the Heisman Trophy, the most prestigious individual award in all of College Football.
A total of 929 votes were cast in the 2015 balloting, according to the Heisman.com website. Henry also break Herschel Walker’s single seasons rushing record falling just shy of 2,000 yards finishing with 1,986 yards. With a passing game that has been inconsistent, the Tide has leaned heavily on Henry in its biggest games. Henry is also almost impossible to take down proven in the fact that he’s averaging 5.9 yards per carry.
“The Heisman Trophy has been a dream of mine since I was a little kid and the chance to go to NY as a finalist is unbelievable, but none of this would be possible without my coaches and teammates”, Henry said in a statement. Christian McCaffrey Stanford RB SO 290 246 177 1,539 3.
McCaffrey broke Barry Sanders’ single-season FBS record for all-purpose yards, shining as a runner, receiver and kick returner. Nobody from the school has won since Jim Plunkett in 1970. Cardinal players have now finished second in four of the last seven years, with McCaffrey joining Gerhart (2009) and Andrew Luck (2010, 2011). When you add Watson in you see a dominant quarterback who has lead his team to the playoffs and has scored more than the other two players combined.
The Heisman has been a dual-threat quarterback’s award nearly exclusive for the last half-decade, from Cam Newton, to Robert Griffin III and Johnny Manziel, and the most recent victor, Marcus Mariota.
Watson is the only player in the country who has surpassed 800 yards rushing (887) and 3,500 yards passing (3,512), and he has accounted for 41 touchdowns.
“Now I know what it takes”, McCaffrey said about becoming a finalist, “following with anything less than that is unacceptable for me”.
“Coach Saban holds us at a high standard and the older guys did a great job of setting a standard and we just have to follow behind it”, Henry said. “A year ago Saturday night (December 12, 2014) he was in the hospital having surgery”.
-At an even 6 feet and 201 lbs., McCaffrey is the smallest of this year’s Heisman Trophy Finalists.
