Here Comes Another Security-Conscious Phone – The GranitePhone
With the GranitePhone, the latest entry into the market for secure smartphones, Sikur is hoping that people will put a high price on their privacy.
The “GranitePhone” has been manufactured by Archos, and was first unveiled by Sikur at the 2015 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February. It runs on Sikur’s own Granite OS, a version of Android that is entirely encrypted, which is what GranitePhone is all about. It’s more of a mid-end smartphone in terms of power, packing a Snapdragon 615 processor, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage and a 5-inch 1080p display. The GranitePhone sports a 16-megapixel rear camera along with an 8-megapixel front facing camera and features a dashboard for calls, contacts, messages, and chats running on the Sikur platform.
While the above specs are decidedly mid-ranged, its operating system is where the phone’s unique selling point lies, according to Archos and Sikur. Instead, it provides multi-layer security and stores all of the usual data (calls, messages, and much more) in the cloud, which can only be accessed via Sikur’s app. Although the device has taken a lot of inspiration from Android, it lacks access to Google’s Play Store, meaning that you’ll really need to care about security to want this thing. According to a report in Tech Times, the GranitePhone endeavors to do this by using a different approach, compared to the other devices. Archos also claims that there are no backdoors in its operating system, making it impossible for hackers to attack the device.
For customers that think that the GranitePhone is worth purchasing, then orders can now be placed through the smartphone’s dedicated website. “With GranitePhone, you can create a corporate digital environment, secure for the exchange of strategic information, without compromising productivity and speed offered by mobile devices”, said Frederico D’Avila, CEO of Sikur in an official press statement.
