Here’s the iPhone 7 Adapter You Really Want
Users will have two alternative ways to listen to music.
The move is likely to be highly disruptive. Those will come standard with new iPhones, but many consumers could find it annoying to use the extra “dongle”. And if you want to make yourself future-proof, then the obvious route you can take is by investing in some decent Bluetooth cans. But the problem with this is that you’re limited to using Lightning headphones only.
The same can’t be said for the alternatives Apple is promoting. Bluetooth can be finicky and hard to use.
Maybe it’s time to buy some Bluetooth headphones. Because they’re powered by batteries, they have limited lifespans before they need to be recharged.
Apple does, to its credit, supply a Lightning adaptor in the box, but should yours break or go missing you’re going to need another. It is available only on the Apple.com website. Instead, it will do audio over the Lightning port, via Bluetooth, and apparently via a Bluetooth-like low-power protocol for the optional AirPods.
But Apple doesn’t even completely support it.
Somewhat more expensive is Mobile Fun’s Lightning to 3.5mm adaptor cable that includes an inline mic and controls.
Now Apple has opened the floodgates though, who knows who will be next to jump. It had no such control over the headphone jack. Basically, Apple is dragging us into the digital age in all respects, whether whether we like it or not.
Another option is available if you are ready to deal with dongles and which involves comparatively fewer wires is using a Bluetooth adapter.
There was a pleasant surprise at Apple’s big event yesterday. It was among the first to drop floppy disk and DVD drives from its computers.
Headphones plugged into a Lightning connector can also produce better sound than ones that are plugged into a headphone jack.
Most Apple fans were left frustrated by the company’s decision to axe the audio jack on the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus mainly because it will prevent them from listening to music while their device is charging.
That’s a lot better than what the company did in the past.
At least, without buying an adapter that is. One will be for regular shots and the other will have telephoto capabilities, giving you a two-fold zoom.
“These initial sales will be governed by supply, not demand, and we have decided that it is no longer a representative metric for our investors and customers”, Apple said in a statement. The fine print mentions that the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus models will not be covered under warranty as the device may result in decrease of “resistance” under “normal wear”. I use it for both work and play on a daily basis. With the removal of 3.5mm jack, Apple was able to make space for new components, such as taptic engine, slightly larger battery and more.
If you still own an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, you should consider making the switch.
For a good portable pair Consumer Reports recommends the Sony h.ear MDR-EX750BT which cost about $270.
