Here’s the Oscars Speech Moonlight’s Barry Jenkins Would Have Made
It reminded us of the 2015 Miss Universe when Miss Colombia was declared the victor instead of Miss Philippines.
La La Land won six Oscars of 14 nominations.
A record number of wins by black stars, a Muslim actor winning for the first time, the victory of an Iranian filmmaker who skipped the ceremony in protest against a travel ban, US President Donald Trump-bashing and a Best Picture victor announcement gone wrong.
In the chaos, there was no going back to the traditional presentation.
Let’s start at the end. Suddenly, there was a flurry of near-panic activities in the room. Brian was reportedly busy tweeting during the show.
Emma Stone, who was named best leading actress for her turn in La La Land, reportedly described it as “one of the most terrible moments of my life”.
Writer and Director Barry Jenkins of “Moonlight” holds up the best-picture Oscar in front of host Jimmy Kimmel as he stands with producer Adele Romanski.
In that moment, Horowitz-who is literally bent over and humbled-wasn’t thinking, “How can I keep this award for myself?” or “How can I keep this news a secret?” or even “How can I work this to make me look good?” After the cast and crew of “La La Land” took the stage, I cringed as they were quickly informed they had not actually won the award. I figured it would be something gritty and sad – another street rat’s coming-of-age story. “I knew I would screw this show up, I really did”. I don’t think Damien set out to be the youngest winning director.
“Is that the craziest Oscar moment of all time?” “The repression is the enemy of civilization”, and other Oscar acceptance speeches. Best actor is a toss up between Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea) and Denzel Washington (Fences), while Emma Stone is out-and-out favorite for Best Actress. He just hugged me. Of the foreign films I saw, I liked “A Man Called Ove” and “The Salesman” equally; two very different films, but both worth seeing.
Actress Halle Berry, who won an Oscar in 2002, was also happy to see diversity. Her letter went on to note “the humility and humanity displayed by the film’s producers” after the envelope mix-up was revealed.
“It’s definitely a sign that the tide has turned” in Hollywood, Robertson said.
The director of Moonlight, Barry Jenkins couldn’t deliver the speech he had prepared for when the film won. Why? His speech was read on his behalf by Anousheh Ansari.
“We are reviewing those protocols, of course”, she said. It was Asghar’s second Oscar. To do that, they will need to keep growing the pool of films featuring diverse actors in complexly written roles and directed by women and people of colour who are given a chance to lead big-budget or high-profile movies.
One observer said London-based PwC is scrambling now. And that is the graveyard. “It was so beautiful”, while Jenkins said of La La Land: “It made me feel nostalgic for LA, which I have never felt”. So people love it and Hollywood loves it. Needless to say, Sunday was a much anticipated night. “So here’s to August Wilson, who exhumed and exalted the ordinary people”.
It is the sort of movie that I suspect a lot of academy members hadn’t bothered to see. Don’t be mistaken, La La Land is a well put together movie and enjoyable, but, the competition it’s up against in most categories are just better films and performances.
