Here’s what happened onstage during the Oscars’ mistake announcement of best picture
There was a major upset at the Oscars on Sunday night – in more ways than one.
PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has singled out accountant Brian Cullinan for the “series of mistakes” which led to the wrong Best Picture victor being announced at Sunday night’s Oscars. Once the ballots have been tabulated, two senior accountants memorize every victor, and then prepare two briefcases with the envelopes used by presenters on the big night. For security reasons, only Cullinan and Ruiz did the final tabulation, and they memorized each name and category. Instead of the Best Picture envelope, they were given Best Actress. Cullinan sent out his since-deleted Emma Stone tweet at 9:05 p.m.
Kimmel joked that “Clyde threw Bonnie under the bus”, noting that Beatty, in confusion about reading from the wrong envelope, handed it over to Dunaway to read the victor. Beatty opens a red envelope and looks at the card inside, giving a double-take.
“I want to tell you what happened”, Beatty said a moment later. We stand on opposite sides of the stage, right off-screen, for the entire evening, and we each hand the respective envelope to the presenter. He looked confused, took a long pause, and then looked over at Dunaway, who clearly thought he was doing some sort of bit. celebrity news
Among other jokes at Trump’s expense, Kimmel said “Remember when a year ago the Oscars were considered racist?”, suggesting that now things are even worse with Trump.
Kat Fisher also demanded an explanation, saying: “Emma Stone said she was holding her Best Actress card that whole time where’d the other card come from CONSPIRACY #Oscars”. “It’s like watching Titanic -except Titanic actually won best picture”.
The organisers of the Academy Awards said on Wednesday that the two PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) accountants behind the mix up that saw La La Land incorrectly named best picture before Moonlight was declared the real victor, will not work the Oscars ceremony again. The statement went on to read, “We are now investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred”.
As the stunned group from “Moonlight” approached the stage, Mr. Horowitz added, “I’m going to be really thrilled to hand this to my friends from ‘Moonlight‘”.
“There was a guy, a stagehand guy, who started kind of buzzing around, looking for the envelope”, Horowitz said. The time stamp shows it was posted at 9:05 p.m., only minutes before the Best Picture blunder occurred. Here are some of the best reactions, which ranged from utter disbelief to more humorous takes.
