Here’s what happens if the British Open ends in a tie today
(AP Photo/Alastair Grant). United States’ Zach Johnson gets a birdie on the 18th during the final round at the British Open Golf Championship at the Old Course, St. Andrews, Scotland, Monday, July 20, 2015.
Johnson shot one of the best rounds of the day to clinch a spot in a four-hole shootout alongside the 2010 Open champion Louis Oosthuizen, from South Africa, and Australia’s Marc Leishman.
Zach Johnson has prevailed in a three-man playoff to win the British Open.
Johnson then went clear with a birdie at the second, but he hit a poor approach to the notorious 17th, the Road Hole, and bogeyed, only for Oosthuizen to miss a four-footer to get back on level terms.
Spraying shots and struggling with the putter, he muddled through the front nine with a 37 – the worst score posted by anyone in the final 17 twosomes.
Meanwhile, Jordan Spieth’s bid for an unprecedented golfing Grand Slam ended in agonising fashion. They’re so hard to win that British bookies would probably make the odds long that any player will have a chance again in the next 13 years.
“I guess that radar is going bonkers right now”, he said.
Now he has 12 victories, including two majors, perhaps warranting consideration for the World Golf Hall of Fame. “I’m just a guy from Iowa that has been blessed with a talent, and this game provides great opportunity”.
Using the first, second, 17th and 18th holes – all par-4s – for the aggregate playoff, Oosthuizen and Johnson opened with birdie while Leishman bogeyed it.
The three entered a four-hole play-off, but Leishman got into immediate trouble when he landed his first shot in a divot on the first hole fairway at St Andrews.
Golf’s greatest youth traded blows with nature on the game’s most ancient layout, and came up just inches and a stroke short after shooting 3-under-par 69 in the final round. He showed his resolve by rebounding with three birdies.
When Spieth walked off the green, he applauded the fans who cheered him on.
As an amateur Dunne can not collect the record £1,150,000 first prize if he wins, but would get to lift the Claret Jug as Open champion as well as the silver medal awarded to the leading amateur.
He became just the 14 golfer to win both the Open Championship and The Masters, joining an elite list that includes Jack Nicklaus, Bobby Jones, Arnold Palmer, Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Gene Sarazen, Tom Watson, Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Mark O’Meara, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.
A 50-footer that curled from left to right before dropping gently in the hole for birdie on No. 16 set the stage.
Johnson sunk a 25-foot putt for birdie on the 72 hole of the tournament to put him at 15-under.
Oosthuizen’s near-miss year continued, as he also finished tied for second at the U.S. Open. Now, he goes to the PGA Championship with a tiny piece of history left to chase.
