Here’s Why The Olympic Diving Pool Turned Alarmingly Green
In this picture taken with a fish-eye lens, the water of the diving pool at right appears a murky green as a men’s water polo preliminary round match between Greece and Hungary takes place at left in the Maria Lenk Aquatic Center at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2016.
Rio 2016’s spokesman Mario Andrada said: “We did have test events with the same number of divers but we are using the pool for a longer period now”.
Andrada said they expect the pool to return to its normal blue color sometime Wednesday. The diving pool remains bright green.
It looks as if the water polo pool is turning green with envy. This change of chemical conditions in the water also produce other issues.
The mysterious shade of the water, which contrasted sharply against the blue of the water polo pool beside it, was also clearly visible on television to millions of viewers around the world, many of whom joked about algae and dye on social media.
Britain’s Tom Daley, who won a bronze medal in the 10m synchronised diving on Monday, told Press Association Sport: “It’s slightly odd to look at.but it actually does make it easier for us to dive because normally, when you’re spinning, it’s hard to see which way is up when the sky and water are both blue”.
“The rain affected a bit the changes in the state of the water”.
On Tuesday the diving pool turned into a murky abyss.
Athletes have continued to compete in the pools while officials repeatedly reassure there is no health risk in either pool, but they do have some hesitance.
Andrada said a test event was conducted in the pools before the Olympics but officials should have done more intensive testing.
Canadian pool experts say strangely coloured water is a common problem. There is absolutely no risk whatsoever for the health of anybody, especially the athletes. “We probably failed to note that with more athletes the water could be affected”, Andrada said. The diving and water polo pools are part of a permanent facility opened in 2007. He said he expected the water to be back to normal soon. The person added that certain unknown components of the city water that goes into the pool after treatment might have been responsible for the imbalance.
