‘Heroes Reborn’ Review: Evos On The Run
And his presence, a strong one in the new miniseries, is part of the reason that HEROES REBORN feels just like another season of Heroes. I nearly feel like this series would have been better served as a collection of vignettes only tangentially connected within the world of Heroes, where it could have had time to fully explore the concepts being thrown our way, but alas, everything is shuffled around with such haste that you never have time to warm up to anything.
Because a number of years have passed since the events of Heroes, the new show can’t just jump right in. He’s also voiced characters on the stop-motion series Robot Chicken, appeared in Thor: The Dark World and appealed to kiddies as the voice of Flynn Rider in Tangled. But then came NBC’s Heroes, which filled a huge void on network TV with its sprawling ensemble, its story about superpowered people around the country, and its dense mythology.
Instead of remembering Heroes as a awful show, we should think of it as a fantastic show that lost its way because it came before its time.
“Heroes” originally aired on NBC from 2006 to 2010. “And then? As with any series, it’s comes down to casting, the Zeitgeist and fairy dust – if you can capture all of those, then you have success”.
NBC is promising the show will be a return to Season 1-level glory (in terms of story, if not ratings), and Thursday’s two-hour opener (8/7c, NBC) mostly succeeds in setting up a potentially intriguing new chapter.
Set five years after the fourth season finale, Heroes Reborn sees people with superpowers (now dubbed “evos”) facing public scrutiny after a terrorist incident in Texas is blamed on one of their own.
Tierney: For 13 episodes, I’m in in a I-can-put-this-on-while-I-do-other-things kind of way. “We’ve got some Snipes in Philly”.
That seems to be a theme for the actors, who received the scripts in a piecemeal fashion, learning about their characters one episode at a time alongside the viewer. We ask those questions again, but in different ways. They are not the only people who get shout-outs from the past, and I’m sure there will be others.
“I think the show still has something to say”, star Zachary Levi said in Toronto. I always thought that, when the show was at its best, it was a tale of two families: The Bennets and the Petrellis. That said, there’s a shaping that has to be done in editing. You have to find the rhythm of when to slow down and speed up. Will you watch the new show? “Yeah, that is a bit of a conundrum”, admits Kring. I think they knew what they were embarking on. Or killing off a hero and bringing him back can be tried, and the resurrected hero can prove as boring or stagnant as before, rather than refreshed. Characters like the time-traveling Hiro, the brain-eating villain Sylar, and the indestructible cheerleader Claire were fun to follow along with at first, but the show quickly got bogged down in the uninteresting origins of their powers and in the larger web of shadowy government agencies. We had some security in quite a few times….
Kring was anxious to point out that while an hour a week of the series might not seem like enough for hungry fans, there is plenty of supplemental material for consumption.
How it unfolded was a bunch of us were watching the Winter Olympics past year and all of a sudden there was an ad: “Heroes Reborn 2015.” We’re also launching two state of the art next generation high-quality video games that are designed for real gamers. It’s only 13. So that means that they have the opportunity to be able to tell the story that they want to tell.
To celebrate, watch these two exclusive clips from each of their big premieres.
It made you believe the precept that if you could save the cheerleader, you could save the world. “And, along the way we’ll deal with issues that are very current, like climate change and greed”. Viewers can watch the video on mobile with a makeshift VR headset (such as the Google cardboard) or can drag around their screens to watch the 360 action. Has the series finally found it’s ideal era?
If this all sounds complicated, fear not because it really isn’t.
If you ever find yourself sitting around with nothing to do, you might want to see how many TV critics trot out the shopworn F. Scott Fitzgerald quote about the dearth of second acts in American lives when they write about NBC’s “Heroes Reborn“, premiering on Thursday, September 24 (coincidentally, Fitzgerald’s birthday).
