Heroes Reborn Season One Recap: 1.3: Under the Mask
Quentin brings up a theory, that if Renautus, a tech conglomerate, is kidnapping Evos to develop technology, maybe Primatech was doing the same thing.
Noah is recognized from the last day he came in, June 13th, the day of the explosion. That turned out to be the wrong move, however, as a doctor quickly recognized Noah and alerted security.
Odessa, TX: Noah Bennett and Quentin Frady steal a pickup truck. They head to a hospital so Quentin can have his gun shot (or nail gun as he reports it) wound fixed up.
As Harris interrogates Miko, Noah holds a security guard hostage and orders him to show him surveillance footage. The people with abilities have been discovered, a disaster happened and now all of humanity is turning against the mutants or in this case “Evo’s” (I’ll never enjoy that name). On the tape, he noticed that Molly Walker (Francesca Eastwood) was with him, and even more strangely, the time stamp seemed to jump randomly, possibly indicating the presence of Hiro Nakamura as well. We specialise in comics and genre fiction – science fiction, fantasy, horror and crime, which makes our course nearly unique. It is easy to strike the wrong balance, to tell readers too much about a character or by creating an interior life that’s hopelessly at odds with the character’s words and actions.
In Tokyo, Miko Otomo fights several security guards in the lobby of Yamagato.
Miko’s story takes an obvious turn, but it’s also disappointing that the story is cut short. After Ren rushes into the room where Miko is being held by Harris, she uses the distraction to cut off Harris’s arm and escape. He thinks they’re supposed to stay, but after all the lights turn red at an intersection, she knows they have to get out of town. She goes to check in, and he stumbles away, as his hands begin to glow. She runs off and gets caught by Harris. Unfortunately, Harris grows himself a new arm and another clone. A non-Evo. So basically Carlos gets his ass kicked. Another strong element for this part was the translation captions. It’s the same sword used by Hiro Nakamura. It is an extra touch that goes a long way. She discovers multiple files, including Oscar Gutierrez, AKA the late Vengador. They decide to head to Colorado to retrieve the sword. Even before they begin walking, he’s already hot. He seems genuinely remorseful and doesn’t want to be murdering every Evo his wife sees. The fast pace and darker tone is clearly a sign that Heroes is ready to keep up with the rest of the shows on the primetime line-up and, provided the ratings keep up, we just might see the permanent return fans have been clamoring for. Surprise! Luke has powers! “We need this”, Joanne insists. When your most marketable trait as an actor is your charisma, you can’t appear this tiresome.
Ren and Miko leave the tower, and he shows her the picture he took of Erica.
Taylor, her TK boyfriend, and Molly Walker are at a small airport in NJ. Erica runs off to present E.P.I.C., a device used to din Evos anywhere on planet Earth.
Later that night, Carlos tracks down the evo the cops were torturing and he tells her and her friends to get out of town immediately.
Wyoming, Molly is being strapped to a table and “commencing integration sequence”.
Carlos is tracking down the dirty cop and taking on the mantle of El Vengador. Carlos escapes with his life, barely.
There was just enough Carlos this episode. There’s a lot going on and while it certainly ups those stakes, “Under the Mask” also exposes a few of the revival’s flaws – most notably, that it may just be impenetrable to those who hadn’t seen the original series. Up until now, she thought everything that disappeared was gone forever. Welcome to high school Tommy. I love the guy, but the show is wasting his talent. Now there’s two of them. And as he prepared to play Tommy, the character he found himself studying most closely isn’t the one you’d expect.
Malina (Danika Yarosh) has only been shown briefly so far this season, but she appears to be a very important person. Indeed, invisible woman, indeed. For instance, I love Miko’s storyline so far. We have just seen clips here and there of the weird eclipse, and we still don’t really know what it meant or how it is tied to anything that is going on. I am also not sure if there is anything here that is fresh or ground-breaking like it was in 2006. What did you think of episode 3 “Under the Mask“? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
