#HeterosexualPrideDay Stirs Up Controversy During LGBT Pride Month
Pretty soon, straight men (and a few straight women) joined the chorus by tweeting about just how secure they are in their heterosexuality. I say the day being straight becomes a crime – as being gay still is in many parts of the world – start one. One of the top responses comes from British comedian Dapper Laughs, who rhetorically asked on Twitter, “What’s next, #BreathingAirDay?” However, the hashtag, which seemed to backfire quickly, drew all kinds of reactions, from memes and couple photos to full blown attacks on straights.
Regardless, some users have taken up the hashtag seriously, criticizing members of the LGBT community who are speaking against it.
President Barack Obama proclaimed June as pride month this year and recently designated the site around New York City’s Stonewall Inn as the first national monument to gay rights.
The senior political writer for Elite Daily, tweeted this statement: “Heterosexual pride day is an insult to every single victim in Orlando”.
