Hewitt back for Hopman Cup assault
Lleyton Hewitt has backed dropped tennis player Nick Kyrgios, saying he is “one of the massive shining lights” for Australia despite his absence from this weekend’s Davis Cup showdown with Great Britain.
However, after choosing to skip the Davis Cup semifinal against Great Britain and taking some time away from things, Kyrgios has been training in Canberra and is hopeful that he has learnt from his mistakes. Hewitt and Dellacqua will compete as “Australia Gold” and there will also be an as-yet unnamed “Australia Green” team.
Australia’s only win in the tournament came in 1999 when Mark Philippoussis and Jelena Dokic claimed victory in the worldwide mixed teams event.
“I don’t basically understand what went behind the curtain or how Nick was also sensation psychologically, but it surely was a pretty worrying go for him”, Murray said, statistics the Daily Telegraph.
“The State Government’s support started when the Hopman Cup began in 1989 and, thanks to a new agreement signed past year , the event has been secured for WA until 2022”, he said.
Lleyton Hewitt will team up with Sam Groth for a chance to take a 2-1 lead into Sunday’s final day, with the duo to face world No.3 Murray and his brother Jamie.
“I’m guaranteed the three matches, but hopefully four if we can make the final”. “I don’t think I’d just play Davis Cup, much as I love the competition”. It ” s a bit unfortunate I ” m not playing, but at the same time it ” s the best decision for my career at the moment. “I’ve got a lot of great memories”.
Defending champions Poland (Jerzy Janowicz and Agnieszka Radwanska) won’t return next January.
Hewitt and Murray are expected to play key roles in the tie for their respective nations.
Murray said his appearance would give him the ideal preparation for the Australian Open.
