Hey Denver: Give Chick-fil-A a Break
Denver officials are debating whether they will allow a Chick-fil-A restaurant to open at Denver global Airport, citing the company’s reputation as an opponent of same-sex marriage.
Concerned Council members invoke laws against discrimination; apparently unaware that one of the long-standing categories of protection is religion.
Kniech later told the Denver Post she was anxious about a franchise in Denver generating “corporate profits used to fund and fuel discrimination”.
Of ten members attending the meeting on Tuesday, there were none to advocate for the American food chain’s bid.
“We can do better than this brand in Denver at our airport, in my estimation”, new council member Jolon Clark said.
Since the controversy a few years ago, Chick-fil-A has become the target of the political left.
The decision has been labelled controversial by a number of online media, who have described it as discriminatory.
Most council opposition focused on now-CEO Dan Cathy’s 2012 support of traditional marriage, with some opposition also targeting “donations made by charitable arms to groups opposing LGBT causes”, The Post reported. Councilman Paul Lopez compared the pro-family stances of some Chick-fil-A leaders to presidential candidate Donald Trump’s comments about immigration and other issues, calling opposition to the airport restaurant “really, truly a moral issue”.
The Business Development Committee of Denver City will probably approach the concession agreement again on September 1.
“Chick-fil-A, Inc. and its franchised restaurant owners are equal opportunity employers, employing more than 75,000 individuals who represent many diverse viewpoints, opinions, backgrounds and beliefs”.
