Hiddink suggests Terry may still have a future with Chelsea
Over 3,000 Chelsea fans have signed a petition on change.org demanding the club give John Terry a new one-year deal.
“I want to come back as a Chelsea supporter in years to come with my kids and see the team doing great”, says Terry via ESPN FC. Unfortunately it was a “no”.
Terry, who has made 696 Chelsea appearances and is the club’s most successful captain, had expressed disappointment that there would be “no fairytale ending” for him at Stamford Bridge. He got told over the phone and I called to set up a meeting the following day.
The Blues stalwart revealed on Sunday that he has been told he won’t be offered a new deal at the club. He is a fantastic servant to Chelsea and a superb captain. Since I have been at the club, I haven’t seen him play badly.
“I’m confronted with many generations of players who have that problem after that career”.
The short-term nature of the veteran Dutchman’s appointment as successor to Jose Mourinho provides an extra layer of uncertainty to the Terry situation, but Hiddink is hopeful a resolution can be found.
Terry has won four league titles during his 18 seasons at the club and was a key figure during the Blues’ title-winning campaign last term. It will be elsewhere for sure.
Due to a load of injuries, Vermaelen started just eight Premier League matches between his final season at Arsenal and his first at Barcelona. The club will move on.
A club’s spokesperson has stated that a new deal isn’t completely out of the question, but Terry has taken it upon himself to announce he will be departing the club at which he has played his entire career.
“No doubt they’ll sign one or two great centre-backs”. According to Jeremy Wilson of the Telegraph, there would be lucrative offers waiting for Terry outside the Premier League, including football leagues in the United States and China. Only Ryan Giggs, Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes have managed more for a single club in the Premier League.
But Hiddink, who has picked Terry for every Premier League game since his appointment six weeks ago, did seem surprised at the club’s stance.
“There was no specific decision made this early”.
