High heat returns to Southern California
“It will be in effect from 10 a.m.to 8 p.m. Friday”.
Sea surface temperatures are in the 70-72 degree range.
The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for San Diego County’s inland valleys, effective Friday.
Utilities have restored power to most of the thousands who lost it during the worst of Southern California’s heat wave. Hot and dry conditions also created an “elevated fire danger”, according to the NWS. They are advised to stay well-hydrated, avoid working in the sun, check on neighbors and relatives – especially the elderly – and provide plenty of water to pets and livestock.
Forecasters urged residents to protect themselves and their loved ones against dehydration, heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses. The previous high of 39.5 C was set in September of 1978.
The system is expected to move out by Sunday, when temperatures could fall back into the 70s and 80s.
Along the coast, meanwhile, “a moderately long-period swell will bring unsafe rip currents and increased wave activity at area beaches this weekend”, an NWS statement said.
