High school football player dies after being hurt in game
“It was complete shock”, said Veneziano, who attended Friday night’s game and was on the basketball and baseball teams with Murray. The Express-Times reported that Coughlin said around halftime Murray fell to the ground and the crowd fell silent. Teammates say he had taken a couple of hits late in the first half that wobbled him.
The quarterback was taken off the field in a gurney after which the team finished the game unaware of the severities of the injuries.
Hamler said he could point to no particular play, and senior tackle Oscar Vega echoed that statement. “We’ve dealt with some tragedy throughout the a year ago and we’ll get through this one, too”.
“I had no idea he was seriously hurt”, Hamler added. Bowen declined to take questions from reporters, saying a cause of death has not yet been determined.
“Our school district, with the cooperation of many, is providing grief and crisis counseling beginning immediately … for as long as the need exists”, said interim Superintendent Gary R. Bowen. “On top of Evans passing, a family member is fighting a battle with cancer and we hope to also cover their medical bills as well”. Burke offered no further details.
The school held a memorial Saturday morning.
Murray was a three-sport athlete at Warren Hills.
Warren Hills was playing a home game against Summit.
“It’s a tragic thing”, said Wayne Hills coach Wayne Demikoff. “We loved the kid”. I just can’t imagine what the Murray family is feeling. “Be successful” was his aspiration.
Throughout Saturday, friends and former teammates continued making trips to the football field, leaving more piles of flowers. “I felt a chill down my spine”. I can not thank you enough Evan for loving me like you did and filling each and every day with laughter and smiles.
Friends and fans remember Evan Murray.
