High School Quarterback Dies After Hit
Warren Hills Regional High School quarterback Evan Murray died after being injured in a game on Friday night.
Murray, who was a three-sport athlete and member of the National Honor Society, was taken to Morristown Medical Center, where he died later that night.
The fundraising page set up by supporters of his family says that Murray, a senior at the high school, took a hit behind the line of scrimmage during the game.
Coughlin didn’t witness the injury but said Murray walked off the field under his own power after taking a hit in the backfield. Warren Hills coach Larry Dubiel said officials are trying to determine what happened. You’ll be missed. You’ll always be the leader of this team, ‘ teammate Mark Formichelli posted on Twitter.
Warren Hills was playing a home game against Summit.
There will be a void of grief left by Murray’s absence from the huddle, the hardwood, the pitching mound and the school hallways. “We are deeply saddened by losing him so soon but I know the Warren Hills community will help you get through this most hard of times”, read one message from the Begane family.
“Football is in a challenging state right now in this concussion era”, said Indian Hills coach Joe Sabella.
Coughlin has established a GoFundMe account to help raise money for Murray’s family which can be viewed here.
An autopsy will determine the cause of death.
Evan Murray – who also played basketball and baseball – had been a varsity quarterback since his sophomore year.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and the New York Jets football team were among dozens of people and groups from around the country who posted condolences via social media Saturday.
