High tides to affect beaches, coastal areas in South Carolina this week
According to forecasters, moderate salt water flooding will happen at the immediate coast within one to two hours before and after the 8:39 p.m. Tuesday high tide at the Charleston Harbor. “Tides and surf will subside on Friday”.
Flood-prone areas of South Florida are expected to once again deal with rising water as the annual king tide rolls in Tuesday and Wednesday.
A long-period northwest swell that has potential for high surf on west to northwest facing beaches will occur Wednesday through Friday, according to the NWS.
Coastal areas in Seal Beach and Sunset Beach in Huntington Beach will be especially susceptible to flooding.
These areas can possibly experience “minor flooding of low-lying areas along the beach… including beach parking lots and possibly adjacent streets”, a National Weather Service statement said. During the King Tide, the moon is at the closest point to Earth on its monthly orbit, and is also aligned with the sun, with the Earth in between, exerting a stronger than usual pull on the water. We are expected to see heavier rain late tonight and into Wednesday morning, and possible thunderstorms.
The NWS is expecting significant beach erosion will continue. These large breaking waves can lead to back and neck injuries.
If you think you will need sandbags for your residence or business go to your neighborhood fire station. Higher-than-normal tides are expected to affect the coast through Halloween.
