Highlights of SC order barring diesel cars, trucks in Delhi
The Supreme Court banned, the registration of new diesel-guzzling luxury cars and SUVs with an engine capacity of over 2000 cc until March 31, unveiling a raft of measures in a bid to clean up the Capital’s filthy air.
The Supreme Court also barred diesel trucks older than 10 years from entering the congested city and halted the burning of garbage, as scathing public criticism mounts over Delhi’s toxic air.

Delhi would be the among the world’s first cities to introduce such strict measures after Lebanon banned diesel vehicles in 2001.
It further held that its order will override the recent order passed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) which had put on hold registration of any diesel auto till January 6.
The court also barred thousands of diesel trucks, which only enter the city every night en route to other parts of the country, in order to bypass toll roads around Delhi.
The court also asked the Delhi government to implement the odd-even vehicle scheme on its own on a trial basis and then decide on the future course of action.

Moving on to the proposal to allow cars with odd and even registration numbers on alternate days from January 1 to check pollution, the court said it wasn’t sure if it would help.
