Hillary Clinton Ally Touted TPP the Day Before She Rejected It
After all, she comes from the generation of Democratic politicians-the most prominent member of which was a certain other Clinton-who made their embrace of free trade deals like NAFTA one of the centerpieces of their efforts to yank the Democratic Party rightward. While serving the Obama administration, she backed the pact calling it the “gold standard” for trade deals during her trip in Australia in 2012.
In an announcement, Mrs. Clinton said she was all the while considering the subtle elements of the settlement – the biggest territorial exchange bargain in history and went for uniting countries speaking to two-fifths of the worldwide economy.
Mrs Clinton said, “As of today, I am not in favor of what I have learned about it. I have said from the very beginning that we had to have a trade agreement that would create good American jobs, raise wages and advance our national security”. In no time, a mashup video showing Clinton endorsing the TPP deal, over and over and over again, began crisscrossing social media.
In a major political setback to US President Barack Obama, his party’s leading presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has opposed the multi-nation Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal.
Clinton issued a lengthy statement explaining that she is “continuing to learn about the details” about the agreement. More than almost anyone else around, she knows where the levers of power lie, and she is comfortable pulling them, procedural niceties be damned.
She earlier complicated matters for the White House by unequivocally opposing the Keystone pipeline, plunging into a debate she had pledged to sit out until the administration decided whether to approve the project, which would transport oil from Canadian tar sands to Gulf Coast refineries.
It is no accident that Clinton’s shifts in positions have come as speculation increases that Vice President Joe Biden will enter the race for the Democrat nomination. We’ve lost American jobs to the manipulations that countries, particularly in Asia, have engaged in.
But she also urged caution, reserved judgment and called for a “trade timeout” the last time she ran for president. But, as the ad demonstrates, Clinton thinks she’ll now have the upper hand at her October. Many of them pointed to the fact that Clinton is now battling against Sen.
“I still believe in the goal of a strong and fair trade agreement in the Pacific as part of a broader strategy both at home and overseas, just as I did when I was secretary of state”, Clinton said.
Emily Schillinger, a spokeswoman for House Speaker John Boehner said in response to the ad, “This is a classic Clinton attempt to distract from her record of putting classified information at risk and jeopardizing our national security, all of which the FBI is investigating”.
Many Republicans, with the exception of Donald Trump, support the deal.
“It is curious Secretary Clinton took so much of her advice from someone who had never been to Libya, professed no independent knowledge of the country and who the White House blocked her from hiring”, Gowdy said. “Modern trade agreements like the TPP will continue that trend, while also setting high standards for labor, human rights and sustainability”.
