Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders Deadlocked in New Iowa Poll
Hillary Clinton, facing an increasingly tight race for the Democratic nomination, pushed her chief rival, Bernie Sanders, to participate in an additional debate next week before the first-in-the-nation primary in New Hampshire.
Not only are the crowds bigger and more energetic, she says, but she is too.
The expectations spin game between Sanders and opponent Clinton could be important in how the results out of Iowa and heading into New Hampshire are perceived. If higher education is now a requirement for jobs in a modern economy, Sanders says the government must guarantee free tuition at public colleges and universities.
Still, Hanick said she learned from her experience backing Obama that inspirational candidates can have their limits.
“If that kids studies hard and does well in school, he or she will be able to get an education regardless of the income of the family”, Sanders said. This time, Sanders does have some labor backing, including the Communications Workers of America, National Nurses United and the American Postal Workers Union, but Clinton has much more, with 22 national labor unions — including many that backed Obama in 2008 — supporting the former Secretary of State. She evidenced that strength when one young audience member asked her why the younger generation didn’t seem to be very excited that she was running.
Sen. Sanders backed his “Medicare for All” plan despite that Medicare beneficiaries have faced some issues, particularly in accessing affordable drugs. Sen.
Clinton, meanwhile, has largely embraced Obama’s record on the campaign trail, touting his health law as a game-changer for uninsured Americans and accusing Sanders of planning to scrap it. A number of Obama’s former aides now work for Clinton’s campaign, and the President is personally closer to the candidate who served in his administration for four years. I knew her before you knew her, before she was Elizabeth Warren.
Other things voters learned: Bernie Sanders “was a very good long-distance runner”, and there’s video evidence that he still has it, while Hillary Clinton’s favorite president is Abraham Lincoln, “sorry President Obama, sorry Bill”. Both Cruz’s campaign and a super political action committee backing him were airing new ads accusing Trump of supporting abortion rights. So we are working hard all over the state of Iowa. “It is unclear why Sanders is the lone holdout”.
Sanders has also seized on the large speaking fees Clinton has accepted from Goldman Sachs, generating some of the most biting attacks in the Democratic contest.
The contrast defines the early race – Hillary Clinton as experienced pragmatist, Bernie Sanders as earnest rebel. Now, as she prepares to again head Clinton’s efforts at her caucus site Monday night, MCreery can’t fathom why her candidate’s lead again feels in peril.
