Hillary Clinton calls for federal inquiry of Chicago police tactics
Hillary Clinton is calling for a federal probe of the Chicago Police Department’s tactics following the shooting of Laquan McDonald, according to a spokesperson.
The mayor went on to say that “Superintendent McCarthy knows that a police officer is only as effective as when he has the trust of those he serves”.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said he is not going to resign in the wake of the release of the Laquan McDonald police shooting video. “Not only did it take a year to file these charges, but Van Dyke was able to continue in the capacity of a police officer during this delayed investigation”. “But given the gravity of this tragic situation, she supports a full review by the Department of Justice”, he said of Clinton. The Department of Justice is still investigating Garner’s death on Staten Island.
The major said the task force will review the system of accountability, police oversight and training in the Chicago police department, reports Reuters. Emanuel also said a police accountability task force is being established, following days of unrest over the alleged murder of a black teenager by a white policeman.
“The mayor [Emanuel] has not reached out to me”, Ramsey said Wednesday.
Mayor Emanuel has said a civil rights investigation of CPD would be “misguided”, given that federal prosecutors already are investigating the McDonald case. Emanuel said he did so on the South Side as recently as Sunday, visiting a church and several stores, the media not in attendance.
“The Chicago pundits opined yesterday that Chicago police superintendents are hired to be fired”.
Madigan also said she is co-writing legislation with state Sen. This task force will be advised by former MA governor Deval Patrick (D), who spent much of his youth on Chicago’s South Side.
The city paid $5 million to McDonald’s family in April, but resisted making the video public until ordered to do so by a Cook County judge last month. “When are they gonna fire the mayor?” asks another. Garry McCarthy, and Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez of a cover-up for waiting so long to release the video and bring charges against Van Dyke, who was not charged until more than a year after the shooting. They will also review and recommend how videos of police-involved shootings and other incidents should be released in the future.
