Hillary Clinton: Ending racial inequality will be the ‘mission’ of my presidency
Bill Clinton will be speaking at a fundraiser reception at 6 p.m., to be hosted by Sonic CEO Cliff Hudson and his wife, Leslie, the Hillary Clinton campaign announced.
“It is real important that anybody who asks for our vote, they really have to address the issues in our community and the main issue that we have right now is gun violence and our young people being murdered”, Holt said after the rally.
Clinton also talked up her own Chicago connections, reminding the crowd she was born in the city and raised in its suburbs.
Hours after Clinton’s speech, Sanders opened his IL campaign headquarters with Cook County Board Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, a former mayoral candidate who forced a runoff before losing to incumbent Mayor Rahm Emanuel in 2015.
While Clinton is visiting the city in person, the Sanders Campaign is opening its first campaign office in the South Loop. In addition to specifically mentioning Sandra Bland, she also mentioned Laquan McDonald, who was shot 16 times and and killed by Chicago Police officer Jason Van Dyke, as well as many other people of color who have been killed by police like Eric Garner, Walter Scott and Tamir Rice. The event gave hope to a beleaguered South Side community, whose residents are still hurting from unemployment, school closures, police shootings, and senseless shootings that continue to kill Black young men and women.
A CNN/ORC poll published Tuesday found Clinton with an 18-point lead over Sanders in SC, and a 37-point advantage among black voters.
“She is selfless in sitting down with a room full of mothers who have violently lost their sons and daughters”, Reed-Veal said in an original poem she recited while introducing Clinton. She said she will build on the progress of the President’s accomplishments and made an impassioned plea for gun safety reform.
Clinton also defended her record on race, insisting that she had been talking about race issues long before the election and refuting the idea that she was only bringing it up now to play for politics.

As Clinton spoke, Sandra Bland’s sisters stood behind her wearing T-shirts that said “Remember Sandra Bland” and “Black Lives Matter”. The big donations have fueled concerns that, despite the agenda for Blacks and the disenfranchised, Clinton remains connected to big Wall Street brokers.
