Hillary Clinton pitches her vision for America in acceptance speech
But coming on the heels of the GOP convention last week in Cleveland, Democrats here also expounded on the theme of national unity and inclusion to draw sharp contrasts between the world views of Clinton and Trump. Though some Bernie Sanders supporters and even disgruntled Republicans might support a third-party candidate, the reality is of course that Trump or Clinton will be the next president of the United States.
Clinton’s unpopularity is second only to Trump’s, with a disapproval rating of 55 percent compared to his 57 percent, according to recent averages.

Hillary Clinton’s acceptance speech Thursday at the Democratic National Convention pulled in just under 34 million viewers, falling short of Donald Trump’s audience from July 22. Despite her decades on the public stage, many know Clinton as much from Republican attacks as her resume, a fact Clinton confronted head-on: “I get it that some people just don’t know what to make of me, so let me tell you”. The hackers had access to the program for about five days.
“I will be president for Democrats, Republicans and Independents”, she said. She showed she was capable of it early last month when she delivered a devastating indictment of Trump.
On Thursday, people familiar with the matter said the FBI is investigating a cyber attack against another Democratic Party group, which may be related to the earlier hack against the DNC.
Clinton is in the midst of a post-convention campaign bus tour through the battleground states of OH and Pennsylvania. “We have to decide whether we’re going to work together so we can all rise together”, she said. One moment she said her “primary mission” would be to create jobs; the next she said her “highest priority” would be national security. “Millions!” Trump said Friday during a campaign appearance in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
“There still are concerns, but there’s a long time to work on those”, she said.
Clinton came into the convention facing deep voter concerns with her honesty and trustworthiness, stemming in part from her controversial use of a private internet server at the State Department.
“A man you can bait with a tweet is not a man we can trust with nuclear weapons”, she said, also characterizing Trump as one of the “little men – the ones moved by fear and pride”.
Polls find that most Americans question Clinton’s honesty.
The speeches and programming represented communities of a wide range of religions, races and backgrounds, while at the same time, highlighting some of Trump’s most inflammatory statements and proposals, including his signature idea of building a wall on the US-Mexico border and banning Muslims from entering the country. “While Donald Trump is busy insulting one group after another, Hillary Clinton understands that our diversity is one of our greatest strengths”.
Trump is also focusing on OH and Pennsylvania, as states where he might make headway with blue-collar white men.
Their goal is to turn out the coalition of minority, female and young voters that twice elected Barack Obama while offsetting expected losses among the white men drawn to Trump’s message.
There is no available data on how many people watched Clinton or Trump’s speeches online.
The convention provided hours of glowing tributes to Clinton, including deeply personal testimonials from her husband, daughter Chelsea Clinton and Obama.
As delegates chanted “Bernie” and others chanted “Hillary”, an exasperated Silverman said, “To the “Bernie or Bust” people: You’re being ridiculous”. “Your cause is our cause”.
Speaker after speaker at the Democratic convention condemned the billionaire’s business practices and offensive rhetoric as delegates waved signs reading “Love Trumps Hate”.
