Hillary Clinton’s VP Search Moves Into More Intense Phase
The common political wisdom these days is that if Hillary Clinton wants to put Bernie Sanders’s hardcore fans in her column, she’d be smart to pick anti-Wall Street crusader Elizabeth Warren as her running mate-a move that could bolster her progressive bonafides on campaign finance and financial reform.
Warren, 66, has been one of the Democrats’ most outspoken critics of presumptive Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, 69.
Several Clinton confidants have been culling a list of potential contenders and have started contacting those under consideration for personal information, The Associated Press reported Tuesday.
“Clinton is going to face a divided government unless there is a total tsunami”, said one moderate Washington Democrat with close ties to the banking industry. Clinton herself as been vague in describing her thinking about picking a running mate.Im looking broadly and widely and Im gonna begin to really, you know, dive into thinking hard about this, she told CBS News earlier this month.
Castro would bring a lot of useful thematic and demographic balance to the Democratic ticket – a young Hispanic man to complement an older white woman. So if Clinton actually did pick Warren for VP, it would be very interesting to see where all that Wall Street campaign cash ends up going.
In the cases of Mr Booker and Ms Warren, that would trigger a mid-2017 special election; in Mr Brown’s case, it might give a Republican two full years of incumbency to build support before the 2018 midterm election. They are Housing Secretary Julian Castro, Senators Elizabeth Warren of MA and Timothy M. Kaine of Virginia.
President Barack Obama thoroughly vetted Kaine as he searched for a running mate in 2008, ultimately passing over the Virginian in favor of then-Delaware Sen.
“Clinton and Warren will discuss their shared commitment to building an America that is stronger together and an economy that works for everyone, not just those at the top”, the release stated. Cory Booker of New Jersey, both Clinton surrogates.
As for him being on the list, Brown told a reporter for The Post, “I’m not going to say anything and I’m not going to speculate”. Thats a particular liability for Ohio Sen.
Clinton, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, has yet to announce her pick for VP or say when she’ll make her choice.
John Podesta, chairman of the Clinton campaign and a trusted confidante, is leading the effort, along with Cheryl Mills, the former secretary of state’s longtime adviser and lawyer.
