Hip-hop musical ‘Hamilton’ is big victor at Tony Awards
But the story behind numerous headlines you’ll read today is the history making moment as all four awards for actors and actresses in a musical went to Black men and women.
Daveed Diggs, and Renée Elise Goldsberry took home Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical, Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical, and Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical, respectively.
Superstar Barbara Streisand, who presented “Hamilton” with the prize for best musical – dressed in an outfit inspired by the show – joined several of the winners in paying tribute to Orlando. He also thanked his wife, actress Nicolette Robinson and his parents. Despite this winning streak, it did not break any records.
The performances were introduced by President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.
Host James Corden, his back to the audience, spoke to viewers when he dedicated the night to celebrating the diversity of Broadway.
Speaking to reporters after his win, Diggs said he is hopeful that it marks a new era in diversity in Hollywood.
Odom said that the show has to continue to make it clear to the victims that everyone is united and in “this together”.
Producer Jeffrey Seller quoted the show in accepting the award.
When giving his acceptance speech for Best Original Score, Miranda addressed the tragic Orlando nightclub shooting that claimed 50 peoples’ lives early Sunday (June 12) morning. Thomas Kail won the award for Best Director of a Musical.
And Miranda posted a photo to Twitter in celebration. Eliza tells her story.
The show also won for Best Book, Best Featured Actor in a Musical, and Best Original Score, among other awards of the night.
The Humans took four, including Best Play.
Jayne Houdyshell, a mainstay of the NY stage, at 62 won her first Tony for “The Humans”. Both won for featured roles. But by far the biggest news of the night?
Those who attended the ceremony wore silver ribbons to show solidarity with the victims and their families.
The shooting was close to home for Christopher Fitzgerald, who was nominated for his role in “Waitress” and went to school in Orlando. “We live in times when hate and fear seem stronger”.
Jessica Lange won her first Tony for playing a drug-addled mother in the revival of the monumental “Long Day’s Journey Into Night”.
“Hamilton” actors had rehearsed segments earlier in the day, but the staged gunfire “made everyone uncomfortable”, given what had happened in Orlando, so it was cut, a Tonys source said.
