Hodgson denies reports of disharmony before Iceland blow
There appears no obvious successor to Hodgson, who has been pilloried in the British media after England’s embarrassing second-round defeat by Iceland on Monday which came 50 years after their only worldwide success at the 1966 World Cup.
Hodgson read out a statement following the 2-1 loss to minnows Iceland, and was not initially scheduled to appear at a press conference following the game.
Right-back Gunter, 26, said: “It may be easy to see it as slightly over the top but it certainly wasn’t meant to be like that way”. Nothing in the first three games here gave me any indication that we would play as poorly as we did.
“If it was true they disguise it very well from myself and the coaching staff”, a press conference streamed live via England’s Facebook page heard from Hodgson, who was understood to caused consternation over tactics and varying selection of Liverpool pair Raheem Sterling and Adam Lallana.
Sky Sports have since revealed that England players, who themselves were shambolic and let down their country as much as Hodgson, doubted the former Fulham manager’s ability with regards to decision-making throughout the tournament.
“I’ve got him a season ticket for next season, I take him to Boro games with his sister”.
Tackle of the Tournament – Ragnar Sigurdsson was on fire.
The Times newspaper said England had been “utterly clueless”.
And Glenn has previously talked up Wenger’s “understanding” of English football.
Glenn also said that the FA would be prepared to leave an interim manager – or even a collection of temporary coaches – in place for a few months in order to get the long-term appointment right.
Gareth Southgate is a former England centre-half and is U21 coach. “He should be culpable, he has never coached proper players and it would just be jobs for the boys if he was to be appointed”.
“Not since a distant World Cup, 66 years ago, have England suffered a humiliation as great as this”. But also it is how fantastic it is for the tournament because Iceland were written off before a ball was kicked and are now sitting in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, England captain Wayne Rooney has insisted that Hodgson always had the players’ support, labelling reports they had lost faith in the outgoing manager “completely untrue”.
Icelandic commentator Gudmundur Benediktsson, whose screaming disbelief went viral after Iceland defeated Austria last week, again went ballistic at the end of Monday’s match.
Iceland will now go on to face host nation France at the Stade de France on Sunday, July 3. Maybe he has looked at a list of the eight favourites and despaired like we did.
