Hokies QB Michael Brewer cleared to practice, could play Friday
Injured Virginia Tech quarterback Michael Brewer got what he wanted to hear Monday: the clearance to practice, although his availability to play Friday night against N.C. State could be a game time decision.
“Hopefully I’ll be ready to play, but if not then I’ll put the headset back on and try to coach my tail off out there and help the team win”. Against Louisville, the Wolfpack couldn’t get going on the ground.
Brewer, who started every game and threw for 2,692 yards in 2013, broke his left collarbone in the season-opening loss to No. 1 Ohio State.
“We have lost this little spark that we are going to have to be able to find back because we are getting to a big point in our season this week when we go on the road at Miami, who just upset Notre Dame, and Louisville”, commented Church. He meant that the loss wouldn’t change Virginia Tech’s hopes in the ACC, but the verbal gaffe was seized upon by fans already outraged at the depths to which these Hokies have slumped.
Miller had another chance at the 36:12 mark as she charged in off a corner kick by Christina Gibbons, but her attempt went just high over the crossbar. Against Pitt, quarterback Brenden Mobley had by far his worst game, completing just nine passes for 91 yards with three interceptions. And if the performance of the offensive line against Pitt last Saturday is any indication, he’ll be squarely in the line of fire again. “I think overall they are, they might be completely the best set of skill kids that we would play all the way around since Ohio State”.
N.C. State’s rushing attack was also sluggish last week, picking up a season-low 45 yards against Louisville.
“There were 13 plays in our backfield, and a lot of those were on first down, which hurts our efficiency on third down”, Doeren explained.
Virginia Tech’s defense has been a staple under Frank Beamer and long-time defensive coordinator Bud Foster.
“We all got reps today”, he said.
The Hokies are struggling against top competition and have won just one of their last seven at home against teams from Power Five conferences. The Hokies have earned their reputation as a hard place to play at night, especially on Thursday nights. It was the Wolfpack’s first game against a real opponent.
“Obviously our guys are excited but they have to maintain their focus. It was a heck of a play”, Beamer said. “Coach Beamer told me, ‘We have competed for championships before, and we have what it takes to get back to that level.’ I appreciate his drive and determination to get us there”.
The Hokies are one of the best teams in all of college football at forcing turnovers on an annual basis.
