Hollande Loses Justice Minister Taubira Over Anti-Terror Plan
Urvoas has been named Justice Minister Wednesday Jan.27, 2016 after Justice Minister Christiane Taubira has resigned, objecting to President Francois Hollande’s push to revoke citizenship from convicted terrorists with dual nationality.
Ms. Taubira and Mr. Hollande “agreed on the need to put an end to her mandate as the debate on the constitutional amendment opens in Parliament today”, the president’s office said in a statement.
Hollande’s office issued a communique Wednesday saying the president had accepted Christiane Taubira’s resignation – just before the bill born out of the Paris terror attacks is taken up by Parliament.
Mr Valls has described the reform as a “strong symbolic act against those who have excluded themselves from the national community”.
The reforms also aim to inscribe the right to declare a state of emergency into the constitution, including powers to raid homes and place people under house arrest without judicial oversight.
The minister had publicly spoken out against the constitutional reform which would allow the government to strip convicted French citizens of their nationality.
Taubira, a devoted leftist best known for championing the legalization of gay marriage, tweeted that “sometimes to resist is to remain, sometimes to resist is to leave”.
While her active role on that major social policy change was widely recognised, she was often accused of advocating a softer touch on law and order than others in her government.
