Hollywood actress Zsa Zsa Gabor dies aged 99
USA chat show host Larry King said: “There will only be one Zsa Zsa Gabor”. The former actress is the great-grandmother of Paris Hilton by marriage.
Gabor, who had been in and out of hospital since a hip replacement in 2010, had several close brushes with death in recent years. She would have turned 100 on February 6.
A year later, Gabor had to have her right leg amputated in life-saving surgery after it was infected with gangrene from what is believed to have started from a massive blood clot. Gabor was of a time when “socialite” was not yet a term of derision.
Celebrities paid tribute to her on social media.
Her husband Frederic von Anhalt said the actress suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away surrounded by her family and friends. Eva Gabor died in 1995 and Magda in 1997. Before her death, Francesca reportedly said, “My mother wanted to be a princess, so she married an evil queen”.
Gabor’s attitude made her as much of a character as her acting.
“Most that are still around from the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s know that Zsa Zsa Gabor is an American icon and the key link in the Gabor-Hilton dynasty, which will still exist for generations to come”, Lozzi said. In her final years, she withdrew from the spotlight that she once welcomed.
But while Gabor seemed to attract scandal with the same ease that she attracted marriage-minded suitors, there was no tribulation that the diamond-studded Zsa Zsa couldn’t overcome with a smile and quotable one-liner.
“A man in love is incomplete until he is married”.
“”A girl must marry for love, and keep on marrying until she finds it.””. Besides the assault on a lawman, she was convicted of driving without a license and an open-container violation.
She had most recently been famous for her 1989 run-in with a Beverly Hills police officer, whom she slapped during a traffic stop.
She was fined and sentenced to three days in jail after failing to complete the terms of her probation. It was also mentioned during a Gabor cameo in A Very Brady Sequel in 1996. On her poor memory: “I call everyone “Darling” because I can’t remember their names”.
In addition to Belge, Hilton and Sanders, Gabor was married to NY businessman Herbert Hutner, oilman Joshua Cosden, Barbie doll designer Jack Ryan, her divorce lawyer Michael O’Hara, Count Felipe de Alba of Mexico and Frederic Prinz von Anhalt. Today, one can imagine Gabor being obliged to eat mealworms in “I’m A Celebrity”, publish a novel, weep on “This Morning”, promote Burberry and be an ambassador for the Brownies. That was Zsa Zsa, dahlink.
