Holm stuns Rousey with 2nd-round knockout
A rematch is on the cards after Holly Holm’s knockout of champion Ronda Rousey who has been taken to hospital after their UFC world bantamweight title fight in front of a record crowd in Melbourne.
“She’s been able to win in devastating fashion because she’s imposed her will on other girls”, Holm said of Rousey (12-1, 6-1 UFC).
Holm used her superior footwork and striking to stay out of Rousey’s grappling range for most of the opening round and peppered her with nasty counter punches as she aggressively rushed forward. Frustrated with inability to catch the speedy Holm, Rousey let her guard down, and Holm was able to capitalize with a few left-handed jabs and a mean elbow.
“(Rousey) was transported (to hospital) because she got knocked out, obviously she’s completely bummed out and depressed. Holly was the right fight. Rousey’s complete dominance in the sport was starting to get boring.
Despite being a former world boxing champion, Holm came into the fight as a huge underdog, and her victory over Rousey is the biggest upset in UFC history. “I can’t tell you how many times I cried in the gym leading up to this”. I don’t look at this belt and think I’ve made it. I think I still have things that I need to do.
As to when a potential rematch may happen, UFC 200 makes plenty of sense.
She is expected to see a plastic surgeon in Australia later today.
You see, for better and for worse, people believe that there is a curse put on athletes who grace the covers of EA Sports titles.
“There was lots of blood sweat and tears but it sure was worth it”, Holm said after winning the crown.
“Getting here….I had so much love and support that I felt like how could I not do this with all that love”.
