Last week, the US attorney in Manhattan filed a civil forfeiture complaint to take possession of the item; however, the suit did not name Cage as the owner, according to Reuters.
Cage bought the skull of the Tyrannosaurus bataar in 2007 from a gallery in Beverley Hills for NZ$403,000 and it came with a certificate of authenticity, the BBC reports. In 2014, DHS contacted Cage’s representatives to inform him that it believed the fossil he had purchased may have been illegally smuggled into the USA from Mongolia.

Nicolas Cage is losing his head – or rather, a dinosaur skull.
Cage’s Hollywood resume includes his breakout film “Raising Arizona”, the “National Treasure” series from Disney and his Oscar-winning performance in “Leaving Las Vegas”.
Nor should he. I mean, he’s made some terribly wrong movies, but if wanting a dinosaur skull is wrong, what guy in his right mind would want to be right?
In recent years, there has been an worldwide effort to return stolen artifacts to their rightful countries-with Mongolia, in particular, receiving many priceless fossils, skeletons, and artifacts taken overseas. Mongolia will be happy to receive their Tyrannosaurus bataar skull back where it was originally found and unveiled.
